Excerpts from a recent Mold Workshop held in Lindenhurst:

One big misconception is the use of bleach.
Everyone is using bleach in Lindenhurst post-Sandy. Bleach is useless. It isn't effective against mold as it leaves the roots of mold intact and ready to return. It will temporarily remove the look of it and temporarily kill it.

The salt water is a category three type of water, meaning it contains bacteria, viruses and germs as opposed to clean water if a pipe was to burst. The salt water has gotten behind the drywall and possibly into the foundation during Sandy. Most surfaces need to be torn up and the foundation and beams all treated with product.

To know that mold will not grow back, the moisture reading must be below:
14% for wood
10% for drywall

Alkaline (salt-based) solutions will break down the salt. Concrobium is salt based.

Concrobium is a cleaner, encapsulate and sealant. It is absorbed into wood and cement. It can be used with a fogger or a sprayer.
A fogger is best so that it gets into all the hard to reach surfaces.

Surfaces Concrobium can be used on include:
glass
wood
sheetrock
ceramic
fabric
metal
plaster
carpet

The product can cover 400 square feet with a fogger per gallon. 500-700 square feet with a sprayer.

It can be sprayed on paint with no problem of corroding it.

If you have an HVAC system, it must be sprayed inside entirely. Treat the ducts by using pump sprayers. You can treat decks and outdoor areas.

Using professionals
Make sure they use air testers.
Be wary of local, fly by night companies. Check Better Business Bureau, research them and get local recommendations.

Some reputable companies include:
Serv Pro
Service Master
Belfore

Seasonally, if the areas are not treated properly, severe issues will arise once spring comes and the weather is warmer with more moisture and humidity in the air.

You must get rid of furniture if the salt water has touched it for 3 days. Mold spores are now in the furniture.

Concrobium background
EPA registered, No VOC's
Accepted by insurance
Available at Lowes, Home Depot
Cost: Approximately #10 for a 32 ounce sprayer. $30 for 1 gallon jug. 5 gallon jug is $149. Going through them directly the cost is $129 per 5 gallon jug.
Concrobium Mold Control is the safe way to eliminate mold with no bleach, ammonia or toxic chemicals. It is so safe he TOOK A SIP OF IT right in front of us.
